If you suddenly started breaking out while you are breastfeeding, this is totally normal. You are not the only one.
Even ladies who never experienced acne before, get break outs while breastfeeding. Its a hormonal imbalance which is common during pregnancy and lactation period.
I started breaking out 7 m postpartum, right when I got my first period. It was no fun but I sucked it up untill my baby was 2 yo. The things we do for our kids!
It took me a while to figure this out. When I ate diary I would get cystic acne, and when I ate sweets I got under-skin bumps all over my face. I have had acne before but never like this. These things would take turns. One day its on left side, next day its on the right side. Then all around my chin and mouth. My dermatologist got confused, she told me to talk to my doctor. Everything that my dermatologist prescribed for me was unsafe for breastfeeding, she told me that its probably hormonal and I should see my doctor. I stopped going to her and decided to deal with this on my own.
I only used Salyclic Accid because its not absorbed by the skin. I felt like this was the safest for my baby. If you are going to use a supplements or any cream ask your doctor first and do not use Accutane (isotretinoin) or Tretinoin (retinol, vitamin A)
Here are few things that helped prevent acne when I was breastfeeding:
- Drinking way more water then usual
We both heard this before but have we actually took time to try it? I have not, until I had to. Little did I know that dehydration could also be the cause of acne. Since you are breastfeeding you have to consume more water anyways. I recommend you get one of these see through bottles and drink at least 2 or 3, or 5 a day. The reason why I always drink out of thse is so that way I see how much I had and how much I have left. This kind of motivates me.
- Eating less sweets ( We crave sweets during pregnancy, BUT nothing can compare with wild cravings during breastfeeding, it’s hard to stop yourself, but try to fill up your drawers with healthier sweets and snacks.
Ditch the diary ( I have tested this many times and sadly diary is a 100% cause of acne during breastfeeding and for some other cases too, because of the hormones that it contsains)
Salicylic Acid Wash (2 times a day, not more because you are breastfeeding your skin is probably dehydrated already) Use a good moisturizer and facial oil.
- Facial ( you can do it at home, or you can visit a salon just make sure you mention that you are breastfeeding)
I weaned my baby off a month ago and my face has cleaned up. I have consumed diary and its not as bad as it used to be. Now i know that diary caused oily skin for me since HS.
If you are one of those people who just realized that you want to give up consuming diary, dont feel like you are alone in the desert, you are not, there is many of us out there. Lucky for you some of us will share our experience and have lots of tips for you. Here is my Diary Free Survial Kit:
